<image:caption>WAVES (Women.Athletes.Endurance.Sports) are women athletes of all abilities, any age, with any race goal. "Training for and competing in endurance sports is a way to keep us fit, active, healthy and competitive and through this, we are all connected. We are a supportive community as we share our own goals, our successes and our struggles and offer support and encouragement to women athletes everywhere. We compete and train in the tri-state area and beyond. Some of our members have run and trained in Ireland, UK, Morocco, Mexico, Caribbean, all over the US in races such Ironman Cozumel, Ironman Lake Placid, 1/2 Ironman 70.3 Atlantic City, Marathon Des Sables (ultra in the desert). You can also find us in local races run by DQ Events, French Creek, BMRC, AARC, DelMoSports, and CGI Racing. Not all of us are triathletes. Some of us are single sport runners, ultra runners, swimmers, duathletes, multi-stage athletes, and cyclists. We also like volunteering at the races where we support race directors in their quest to put on a great race as well as support our fellow athletes." Although Turks Head Racing has members of all ability levels, it is known for its competitive athletes, who often podium in their respective age groups at local races. THR holds weekly track workouts: Tuesdays 6:30pm (6:15 warmup) at Westtown School Track; Thursdays at 6:30pm West Chester YMCA (run with West Chester Running Club). Membership is $40/year, and you can join using this link. THR has an active Facebook group, and you can quickly obtain answers to any questions there.</image:caption>

<image:title>Triathlon Clubs - Bicycle Coalition Youth Cycling</image:title>
<image:caption>While the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia's Youth Cycling program ("BCYC") is not technically a club, I'm including them here as an unabashed plug for a non-profit charity (funded by donations and corporate sponsors) that is near and dear to my heart. BCYC aims to foster healthy habits, independence and leadership in Philadelphia high school students through the sport of competitive cycling. BCYC also increases students' physical fitness and well-being through cycling practices and nutrition education. In 2017, BCYC ran 7 teams in Philadelphia that impacted 103 student athletes. Despite its focus on cycling, BCYC is not just about riding and racing. Each cycling practice incorporates teaching life skills, such as teamwork, perseverance, and goal setting. Further, BCYC students that endeavor leadership skills receive college workshops and career preparation. BCYC was founded in 2007 by Ryan Oelkers and Jay Snider. The duo first envisioned the program as a junior cycling team organized out of Jay’s Cadence Cycling & Multisport Center, in Manayunk, as a means to introduce more youth to the sport of cycling. In 2013, the program became one of the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia’s educational programs. Since that time, BCYC has been a program solely run by the Coalition, and it is no longer affiliated with the shop in Manayunk (although we’re all good friends!). You can read more about the origins of this unique and inspiring program in this Bicycle Magazine article. You can also e-mail me at phillyendurance @ gmail.com to learn more about how you can support BCYC.</image:caption>

They do this by practicing skills which will help each swimmer offset anxiety and navigate swim courses more effectively, resulting in safer and faster open water swimming. YMCA of the Pines is a nice swim venue. Don't be fooled by the dark brown water color due to the local Jersey pines. The water is clean tasting and water quality is good.</image:caption>

<image:title>Philadelphia Open Water Swims and Clinics - French Creek Racing</image:title>
<image:caption>French Creek Racing, run by pro triathlete Coach John Kenny, holds frequent Schuylkill River open water swims at 1400 S. TROOPER RD., NORRISTOWN, PA -- right off of the Schuylkill River Trail. Open water swims are held every Sunday-Wednesday, and Thursday. Sessions usually cost $12/session, and multi-passes are available. Swim dates for 2020 have not yet been announced, but check out FCR’s page for updates at http://frenchcreekracing.com/events/. In addition, FCR runs an Open Water Race Series at the same Norristown location. 2020 race dates have not yet been announced, but in the past, each race is held on Tuesday night, 6PM registration / warm up, 7pm start. Register for the Open Water Race Series here. $25 to pre-register, $30 on-site. Contrary to popular belief, the Schuylkill River is actually one of the best local open water venues we have for swimming. During dry conditions, the Schuylkill River is actually one of the cleanest bodies of water where you can swim open water in this area. Indeed, my doctor at Penn Medicine Radnor is a triathlete and has commented to me that this river is one of the cleaner bodies of water in our area. Another little-known fact is that the river is a public body of water and anyone may swim contingent on approval from the owner of the access point (We highly recommend swimming only when supervised by certified lifeguards). The pollution stigma dates back to before environmental regulation when the Schuylkill River was, in fact, one of the most polluted rivers in the US. In the past few decades, the river has cleaned up immensely. In the past 2 years, we've been out on days where you can see the bottom at an 8 foot depth. FWIW, if you live along the river corridor, it's quite likely that you get your drinking water out of the Schuylkill. In addition to open water swims, FCR also holds many masters pool swims (very friendly group and open to all ability levels) throughout the week, as seen in the schedule. Sign up for indoor masters pool swims here. Also, during the summer months, FCR hosts swims at the outdoor 50m Upper Merion pool. Sign up for Upper Merion pool swims here. <image:title>Philadelphia Open Water Swims and Clinics - TWiley Sports</image:title>
<image:caption>TWiley Sports, run by Coach Todd Wiley, holds open water clinics and swims at Lake Nockamixon, the largest lake in Bucks County, PA. Lake Nox is a gorgeous and clean body of water, and one of my favorite local places to swim open water. Unfortunately, the State Park is quite strict on allowing swimming, so there are only a few dates that TWiley offers open water training. The open water clinic is designed to help swimmers build their confidence in the open water. This is a hands on session with discussions geared towards becoming more efficient with open water skills. We will cover: dealing with anxiety of swimming in the open water, sighting, swimming in crowds, using a wetsuit, and why swimming in the open water is so different than swimming in a pool. Coaches will give a dry land discussion then be in the water practicing these skills with the swimmers placing them in different groups based on their needs and abilities. The clinics will start at 8 am and end approximately at 10 am. The swims will take place with a start time of 9:15 am. The swims are geared towards experienced triathletes and swimmers that want to simulate race conditions and get a practice swim in on the .5 mile course. Swimmers will start together and will be able to time themselves for .5, 1 mile, 1.5 mile if they wish. The swim course will be monitored with lifeguards and coaches. These swims are for triathletes or swimmers that have gone through a open water swim clinic. 2020 dates TBA. Prior 2019 swim dates: June 9, June 30, July 21. Clinics cost $35, swims cost $20. Register here.</image:caption>

<image:title>Philadelphia Open Water Swims and Clinics - Mid-Atlantic Multisport</image:title>
<image:caption>Mid-Atlantic Multisport, run by Coach Bill Hauser, holds open water swims at Marsh Creek State Park, Downingtown, PA. "Mid-Atlantic Multisport has been providing open water swimming instruction and training opportunities for triathletes and open water enthusiasts since 2008. During this time, we have helped thousands of athletes overcome their anxieties related to open water and become stronger, more confident swimmers. Our popular Open Water Swim Series is a collection of ten open water training swims spread throughout the spring and summer months. Register for a single session or purchase a Season Pass and attend all of the swims for a greatly discounted price. At many of the sessions, we also offer instructional Skills & Safety Clinics for beginners." Marsh Creek is a large man-made lake in Downingtown, PA. No motorized boats are allowed in the lake (electric motors only), so the water quality is quite good. The lake is larger than ETA Coach’s YMCA of the Pines lake, and can get slightly choppy on windy days. This gives you a good feel for open water swimming. Standard Registration (closes 48 hours prior to the scheduled session start time): $20. On-site Registration: $30. Cash or check only. <image:title>Youth Triathlon Events and Races - KidzTri3</image:title>
<image:caption>KidzTri3 is a Premier Youth Multisport Organization whose goal is to inspire and motivate youth, through the sport of Triathlon, to develop self-confidence, physical fitness and to lead an active, positive and healthy lifestyle. Founded on one basic principle — to provide kids of all athletic abilities an opportunity to compete in a sport and feel like a superhero! Boys and girls compete in age appropriate distances as they swim~bike~run, with an emphasis on fitness and fun. All kids are encouraged to participate, regardless of their athletic ability. We create a supportive, encouraging environment which allows our young athletes to strive to be their very best, challenge their own perceived physical limits as well as learn how to compete as a good sportsman. Currently, our geographical reach is the Tri-State area (NJ, PA, DE); however, we have athletes and their families travel from all over the country to participate in KidzTri3 events, and we plan to expand our programs to other parts of the country through controlled, organic growth. There are many events scheduled from May-September 2018. See the schedule here.</image:caption>

<image:title>Philadelphia Triathlon Bike Shops - Trek Factory Store, Wayne, PA</image:title>
<image:caption>In Spring 2017, Trek acquired numerous local Bike Line stores in the Pennsylvania region -- further illustrating the recent trend of manufacturers seeking ways to market directly to consumers (see Advanced Sports International's, parent company of Fuji and Kestrel, acquisition of Performance Bicycles). The Trek factory store located in Wayne, PA was formerly a Bike Line shop, and before that, High Road Cycles, and before that, a Bike Line -- confusing, yes. They are outfitted with a state-of-the-art Trek Precision Fit bike fitting system. Contact: 165 W. Lancaster Avenue, Wayne PA 19087; 610-687-1110</image:caption>
